A toroidal transformer is known to be one the highest performing transformer. A toroidal transformer has the smallest size (by volume and weight), inferior leakage inductance, and an electromagnetic interference (EMI) that is much lower. The use of a toroidal transformer is good for any transformer application that can accommodate its shape. Although usable, a toroidal transformer are not always practical for some applications.
The superior magnetic properties of a toroidal transformer does entail a consequence: the transformer has a memory of what polarity the primary voltage had prior to when the power was last turned off. Whenever the voltage has the same polarity when the toroidal transformer next is turned on, the core will saturate for part of a half-cycle, and a high in-rush current will flow in the primary of the toroidal transformer. This in-rush current s larger than the in-rush current in a conventional transformer, but it is of very short duration, so it will not affect slow-blow fuses or magnetic overload protectors with thermal delay characteristic.
A tape core is a magnetic structure, usually found in a toroidal transformer, whose magnetic core is formed by concentric wraps of a magnetic alloy with thin insulated film between layers.
