Unfortunately, many people don't realize that fireworks have a darker side. Last year, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that 9,600 emergency-room treated injuries were associated with fireworks. "There is no such thing as a safe firework," said Dr. Dave Leminick, an emergency room doctor at Highlands Hospital. "All fireworks have heat and explosive power, and therefore carry a risk of injury." The peak time for fireworks-related injuries is from mid-June to mid-July.
